Cricket PNG Celebrates SP Sports Awards Finalists

Port Moresby – Cricket PNG is thrilled to announce that a cricket player and one of the teams have been named finalists in the prestigious 2025 SP Sports Awards.

Gaba Frank, captain of the Garamuts, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Junior Male Athlete of the Year award, a proud moment for Cricket PNG and as seen in his outstanding leadership and performance on the field. Equally exciting is the inclusion of the PNG Lewas, the national women’s cricket team, as finalists for Team of the Year.

Cricket PNG extends appreciation to the SP Sports Awards Selection Panel and congratulates all 36 f inalists across the 12 award categories. With over 210 nominations received this year, being shortlisted is a significant achievement and reflects the continued excellence in PNG sport.

Cricket PNG Chairman Michael Harrison said, “Gaba continues to inspire young cricketers across the country, and the Lewas continue to lead by example in representing our nation with pride on the international stage. Being named as finalists highlights the hard work, talent, and commitment of our cricket community.” "A reward for been recognized for your contribution and hard work.

Gaba has just recently been selected in the Men’s team - Baramandis (Train On Squad ) and we wish him all the best as a future great player for PNG Men’s side. He added, "To the Lewas team fantastic news and congratulations on been finalists.

Hard work has seen the Lewa’s receive ODI Status last year and only last week extended for another 4 years. Lewas are ranked 15th in the World in 50 over fixtures and ranked 12th in T20 Format."

The winners will be revealed at the SP Sports Awards Presentation Night on Saturday, 14 June 2025, at the Crown Hotel in Port Moresby. The event will be live-streamed on the SP Sports Awards Facebook page and broadcast live on FM100.

PNG Cricket PNG (CPNG) is the National Sports Federation responsible for the governance, promotion and development of cricket in Papua New Guinea (PNG). CPNG has been an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1973 and is supported by the ICC East Asia-Pacific (EAP) regional office, and more recently the PNG Olympic Committee. CPNG currently has about 70 staff in ten (10) regions across PNG with a majority involved in driving entry-level participation through the Schools Kriket Programme and the School Kriket Programme (Malolo Hard-Ball Competition).
